Guide to Grindstone Lake

While you’re enjoying your relaxing cabin getaway, you may feel the need to leave the cozy cottage and explore what Ruidoso has to offer. One of the most romantic and fun-filled places to visit in town is Grindstone Lake! This little lake lies within walking distance of our cabins, so you don’t need to go too far to enjoy a day in the water. While abundant water activities make up the majority of what you can do, plenty of other activities will keep you busy on your land legs. Here’s our guide to the Grindstone Lake Rec Area!

Ruidoso Hiking Trails

You can enjoy up to three hikes while you’re at the Grindstone Lake Rec Area. Each one of these wrap around and cross each other, so it’s possible to merge hikes if you want an all–day trekking experience. None of the hikes are particularly difficult, but they are lengthy! Make sure you pack water, snacks, and proper clothing before your journey.

Grindstone Stables

While hiking the 18 miles of trail on your own two feet can be fun, it might get old after a while. Hit up the stables near the lake to go on a guided horseback ride through on the trail!

The trail walking goes for one-hour, and may be experienced year-round. This is a romantic activity to try with your significant other, and can also be a fun time for the whole family.

Grindstone Lake NM Fishing

Cozy up to your partner and family members, it’s time to go fishing! You can either shore fish, or you can bring a canoe or fishing kayak (non-motorized) into the lake yourself.

Fishing Report

Have you been wondering what kind of fish are in Grindstone Lake? The answer is pretty simple: rainbow trout. The local wildlife center constantly replenishes the rainbow trout population in this lake exclusively for your catching pleasure! If you were hoping for a wide variety of fish to find, you may be a little disappointed.

Grindstone Lake Boat Rentals

For guests who don’t have their own watercraft, the Grindstone Lake Boat Rentals are fair in price and already approved—no boating reservation required! They have an assortment of canoes that can fit 1-5 people. You can rent them for the whole day, and it can be a great way to see wildlife.

The inflatable platforms add a bit of whimsy to a typical lakeside vacation, making the trip more exciting for children. The Wibit Water Park has a few slides, bouncing platforms, and climbing sections that you can run through. Be conscious of other guests, and make sure everyone in your party is safe.
